What Is An Ampoule & Why Use One?

Skincare is an essential part of our daily routine, and we're always looking for new products that can help us achieve and maintain healthy, glowing skin. One product that has gained recent popularity is the ampoule.

Ampoules have been a staple in European skincare for decades now and are slowly making their debut known here in the U.S.

In this blog, I'll be discussing what an ampoule is, why it is used in skincare, how to use it, and its many benefits.

What is an ampoule?

Ampoules are small, hermetically sealed glass containers that hold highly concentrated skincare solutions to help address specific skincare concerns. They're something that even dermatologists and pharmacies may recommend. Ampoules are typically used for a short period of time, usually two to four weeks, as a booster in your regular skincare routine.

Essences, Serums, and Ampoules: What makes them different?

Essences and serums are very similar products. Because of how similar they are, you don't actually need to include both of them in your skincare routine; just one of them will do. These products can be used as a sort of daily maintenance to moisturize and nourish your skin and address specific skincare concerns.

Ampoules are much stronger and more potent than your typical essence or serum. The solution in ampoules contains a higher concentration of active ingredients and is designed to penetrate deeper into the skin.

Think of an ampoule as being similar to a whitening treatment for your teeth. It's a concentrated formula used only once or twice a week that really helps to boost your skin's overall complexion, allowing you to achieve glowing, radiant skin.

Why use an ampoule in skincare?

The highly concentrated solutions in ampoules are designed to provide an intense and targeted treatment. Including ampoules in your skincare routine can help provide you with a faster and more effective solution to any specific skincare concern you may have, such as hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, dehydration, or acne.

How do you open and use an ampoule?

Even though most ampoules come with instructions inside or on the box on how to use them, it can still be difficult to actually get the product out. If you've ever used ampoules before, you know that it can be a little disconcerting to know you have to break open the container.

Here are just a few tips on how you can open an ampoule if you are struggling to do so. You can also check out our video here.

    1. Shake

Putting the ampoule between your thumb and pointer finger, you can shake the contents of it up and down; this ensures that your contents mix well. Flick the neck of the ampoule to make sure that the contents then settle at the bottom of the vial.

    1. Break

Most ampoules will come with a device that will help you with breaking them open. Put the device given to you on the opening of the bottle and pull down to break off the top. Pulling the neck of the bottle to the side furthest away from you, you should hear the seal break and the top half should break away from the bottom.

    1. Prep

When you are about to put the ampoule contents into your hand, please be aware that it is glass. You should hold the ampoule far enough away that you will not get hurt by the glass. You should also dispose of the top half that broke off so it does not fall, get lost, or hurt you in the future.

    1. Apply

We recommend only using ½ of the ampoule since it is a highly concentrated formula and using it at night. Gently massage it into the skin including your face, neck, and décolleté, making sure to avoid the eye area. Use slow circular motions to rub in the concentrate until it has completely absorbed into the skin.

    Benefits of Using an Ampoule

    1. High Concentration of Active Ingredients: Ampoules contain a higher concentration of active ingredients than regular skincare products, making them more potent and effective.
    2. Targeted Treatment: Ampoules are designed to target specific skin concerns, such as hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, dehydration, and acne.
    3. Quick Results: The highly concentrated solutions in ampoules penetrate deeper into the skin, providing quicker and more effective results.
    4. Boosts the Efficacy of Regular Skincare Routine: Using an ampoule in conjunction with a regular skincare routine can boost the efficacy of the products, helping you to achieve healthy, glowing skin.
    5. Convenient and Easy to Use: Ampoules are easy to use and come in small, portable containers, making them convenient for travel and on-the-go use.

Remember, products that are high in concentration should not be applied twice a day everyday like some skincare products should be. It is something that should be applied once or twice a week.

Ampoules are truly a skin saver and can be an excellent addition to your regular skincare routine.

    • Hey, Phyllis, great question! When it comes to preserving the unused portion of the ampoule after opening, there are a few tricks you can try if you can’t replace the cap.

One option is to carefully cover the opening with a small piece of plastic wrap or foil. Make sure to press it tightly (and carefully) around the neck of the ampoule to create a seal and prevent air from entering. Then, secure it in place with a rubber band or tape.

Remember to store the sealed ampoule in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight to prolong its shelf life.

      I hope this helps!

    • After opening it and it said to use only half, how are you suppose to save the other half you did not use?
