How to Prevent Dry Skin Around Your Eyes This Spring

Hey, beautiful! 🌸

Spring is here! The flowers are blooming, the days are getting longer, and we're all ready to shed those winter layers. But you know what else comes with the season change?

Dry, flaky skin—especially around the eyes!

Every spring, without fail, I find myself battling dry patches around my eyes. 😩 If you’re nodding your head right now, you’re not alone. That delicate skin around the eyes can be particularly sensitive to all the shifts in weather, allergies, and yes, even the increased sun exposure.

So, what’s a gal to do? How can we keep the skin around our eyes glowing and hydrated without the constant itchiness and flakiness? Let’s talk about the secret to preventing dry skin around your eyes this spring, and I promise it’s easier than you think! 🌟

1. Hydrate Strategically 💧

When it's springtime and your skin is adjusting to both indoor and outdoor air, your skin craves hydration—but not in the “just slather on any old moisturizer” way, because you and I both know it's not that simple. The skin around your eyes needs specific moisture and certain types of hydration to stay plump and smooth during spring.

So here’s the thing I’ve learned: layering hydration is key. It’s not just about slapping on a moisturizer and calling it a day. Instead, try layering a hydrating serum under your eye cream. I always use our Vitamin C Serum in the morning (hello, brightness!) followed by a rich eye cream (like our Ocean Caviar Eye Cream) that seals in all that moisture. Think of the serum as giving your skin a drink, and the eye cream as putting a cozy blanket over it to lock it all in. 🔒

And don’t forget to hydrate from the inside out too! Drinking plenty of water during the day will keep your skin—and your eyes—happy and healthy.

2. SPF is Your Best Friend 🌞

Yes, we know the sun is out more during spring, and that means more UV exposure. But the skin around your eyes is especially vulnerable to damage, and that can lead to more dryness and irritation. And we don't want that!

If you're not using an eye-safe sunscreen daily, start now!

We all know how important sunscreen is, but let’s face it, most of us forget about the delicate skin around our eyes when applying SPF.

I’m obsessed with using a sunscreen that’s made specifically for the eye area. My go-to is EltaMD UV Daily Broad-Spectrum SPF 40. It’s lightweight, non-irritating, and has a built-in moisturizing effect. Plus, it's safe for the eye area and won’t cause stinging or burning. Seriously, I've been using this for a while now, and I can’t recommend it enough—it gives me the protection I need while still feeling light and non-greasy.

Here’s the kicker: this sunscreen has hyaluronic acid in it (yes, my favorite ingredient!), which means it’s hydrating while protecting. So, not only is your skin protected from harmful UV rays, but you’re also giving it a little moisture boost throughout the day. It’s like a two-in-one skincare superhero! 🦸‍♀️

3. Allergies: A Sneaky Culprit 🌿

Spring allergies are no joke. One minute, you’re enjoying the fresh air, and the next, your eyes are itchy, puffy, and looking like you haven’t slept in days. Been there, way too many times.

The problem? Allergies trigger inflammation, which leads to puffiness, irritation, and even drier skin around the eyes. And if you’re rubbing your eyes (I know it’s tempting!), you're making things worse by breaking down collagen and causing even more irritation. No, thank you.

Here’s what actually works for me when allergy season hits:

✔️ Apply a cool compress. When my eyes feel extra swollen, I keep a couple of chilled spoons in the fridge and press them under my eyes for a minute or two. It’s an instant de-puffer, and it feels so good.

✔️ Ditch the powdery eye makeup. Powder products (eyeshadow, setting powder) can cling to dry patches and make your eyes even itchier. During allergy season, I switch to a creamier concealer and skip the powders altogether.

✔️ Don’t forget to cleanse—gently. Pollen, dust, and allergens can cling to your lashes and skin, so washing your face and lashes at night is key. A gentle cleansing water (like our Vitamin C Cleansing Water 😉) works wonders for removing residue without stripping moisture.

Spring allergies might be unavoidable, but looking like you’ve been crying all day? That’s preventable. Stick to these tricks, and your eyes will stay fresh and happy all season long.

4. Go Easy on the Scrubbing 🫧

Exfoliating is great for removing dead skin cells and helping your skin feel fresh. But when it comes to the delicate skin around your eyes? You’ve got to be extra gentle. No harsh scrubbing or exfoliating here!

Instead, opt for a soft, non-abrasive exfoliant that’s kind to the eye area. Think gentle chemical exfoliants (like lactic acid) rather than physical scrubs that can cause irritation. I love a gentle exfoliant to keep my skin smooth, but I’m careful around my eyes—those little circles need TLC, not too much pressure!

The One Thing You Should NEVER Do If You Have Dry Skin Around Your Eyes 🚫

Don’t rub your eyes!

I know—it’s tempting, especially when your eyes feel dry, itchy, or irritated. But rubbing can make things so much worse. It breaks down the delicate skin barrier, making dryness and fine lines more noticeable. Plus, if allergies are the culprit, rubbing can spread allergens and make the irritation worse.

Instead, gently press a cool, damp washcloth over your eyes to soothe them. And if you must  touch your eye area, do it with your ring finger (it applies the least pressure) and only after applying a hydrating eye cream or oil.

The Bottom Line: Your Eyes Deserve the Best 💖

Spring doesn’t have to be the season of dry, irritated eyes. By hydrating, protecting with SPF, managing allergies, and being gentle with your skin, you can keep the delicate skin around your eyes fresh, bright, and glowing all season long.
